Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

What is Cognitive Processing Therapy? (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based therapy for PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. Treatment involves 12 sessions that utilize cognitive and behavioural interventions to help you better understand how trauma impacts thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and how to reduce distress and impairment. Our team is intensively trained by the treatment developers of CPT to ensure only the highest quality of care. We work closely with the First Responder community, WSIB, Veteran’s Affairs, and other community partners.

Goals

From the official CPT website goals of treatment include:

  • Improve understanding of PTSD
  • Reduce distress about memories of the trauma
  • Identify and challenge unhelpful trauma-related thoughts
  • Decrease emotional numbing and avoidance of trauma reminders
  • Reduce feelings of being tense or “on edge”
  • Decrease depression, anxiety, guilt or shame
  • Improve day-to-day living
  • Improve sense of safety and trust
